Still On Break, But…

I know we’re still within the six weeks I estimated for this current hiatus, but wanted to drop by with an update. The big reason for the break is that I recently finished moving from Las Vegas to Huntington Beach, Calif., and man, let me tell you, moving 300 miles across the desert is way more demanding than moving 3 miles across town. But we made it, yay.

However, I’m not going to be “settled” for a while. My current home office is, well, just a collection of boxes. I have no desk, no chair, nowhere to plug in all the digital stuff necessary to produce new Utopian strips. I’ve been working on a laptop in my living room, the only room with any sort of seating. Plus, we have a LOT of boxes to get through (not that I can do much with them until new furniture arrives) and just general chaos to deal with (one of our dogs is currently wearing a cone). So… it seems like this hiatus MIGHT last a little longer than expected.

On the flip side, I found out I was accepted for a spot in Artist Alley at next year’s Emerald City Comicon! To be honest, I totally forgot that I even applied. This is the first time doing ECCC since it became as ReedPOP show (I’ve done ECCC as both an exhibitor and an artist several times before), and the first time I’ve been accepted to any ReedPOP show’s curated Artist Alley, so it’s pretty exciting. It also means by March I have a lot to get done.

But first, I have to get ready for Long Beach Comic Con, which is only two weeks away (!!), and it’s highly possible some of the things I need for the show are in a storage unit in Las Vegas, so … we’ll see how that goes. Stay tuned.

Return to the LBC…C

The comic is still on break, sorry, but I’ll make it up to you if you find yourself at this year’s Long Beach Comic Con, which returns to the Long Beach Convention Center on Sept. 2 and 3. It’s the first convention appearance I’ve made in all of 2017, and I’ll actually be bringing prints, original art and sketches with me. In recent years, I’ve focused mostly on my role as head honcho at Pop! Goes the Icon, but I’m moving toward focusing more on, well, me over the next year or so.

I’ll have more details as the event gets closer, including exactly where in Artist Alley to find me, and what I’ll be bringing. Any requests? (Other than for me to get back to work on new Utopian Foundation comics.)

Mid-Season Break

by Pj Perez on July 10, 2017 at 9:31 pm

Hey, remember that great cliffhanger I left you with last week? Well, savor it, because we’re going on a little summer hiatus. There’s a few reasons. One of which is needing to just plain ol’ get caught up on this here series. But another is because things in my personal life are about to become very hectic (for good reasons, promise!), so I’m just not going to put the added pressure of getting this comic out, nor do I want to set up any false expectations.

So how long will the hiatus be? Probably a month, six weeks at the most. In that time, I’m also going to be working on preparing digital and print collections of these comics to make them available to folks in different places and on different platforms, and making plans to get back to the comic convention circuit. Because as much as I sometimes loathe spending three days in a convention center, I also really miss the great connections made with real live people. So stay tuned for that, too.

Get your bingo card

So, the bad news: No new comic to post today. Yes, the cupboard is officially empty. But I have the next two strips in various states of finished, so we should be back on track and I should be a little bit ahead again next Monday. Sorry for the delay in the middle of such a crucial storyline.

The good news? Um, here’s a Utopian Foundation bingo card. Stamp a space every time one of these things occurs in the comic! Or play it like a drinking game as you read the comic. Either way works.

From the Sketchbook: Amanda’s Gala Dress

by Pj Perez on April 5, 2017 at 12:12 pm

Most of the dresses worn by the women in attendance at the Utopian Foundation Gala are based on images I found searching for such things online. I knew I wanted Amanda‘s dress, however, to be different. At first, I considered not even putting her in a dress, maybe going with a pantsuit or something like that instead. But I wanted something to contrast from her usual “tomboy” look, maybe something that might get the somewhat more traditional Luis to notice her. So I sketched this, probably during a lull at Long Beach Comic Con:

I was shooting for a “punk rock princess” look, and for the most part, that’s what made it to the comic:

About

"The Utopian: Foundation" is a serial comic strip about young people living in a Southwestern U.S. city whose lives are all connected – and shaped – by the influence of "The Utopian," the idyllic alter-ego of James Douglas, who gave his life to help end corruption and what he perceived as "evil" at Sagebrush High School.
