Christmas Break

Hey folks! Just wanted to let you know that The Utopian: Foundation will be on hiatus this week. It’s the first break from the twice-a-week schedule I’ve taken since the strip’s launch in April, and I figure a lot of you are tied up with your own holiday shenanigans, so you might not be checking such things anyway.

BUT, in the event that you need a distraction from all that family time (and I know we all do), or if you have nothing better to do, my Christmas present to you is a FREE download of the first issue of The Utopian from fall 2009:

the utopian 01 cover

See the origins of this little world in which Foundation takes place come to life in full, gaudy color (and also see how awful my artwork was just three years ago). And if you want to read more, well, you know where to go. Download and enjoy.

And then I’ll see you back here on Monday, Dec. 31 with the next chapter in the continuing saga.

Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival this Saturday

I’m kind of shocked I didn’t talk about this more in one of the commentaries for the regular comic updates, but I guess I just assumed I did because I’ve been doing SO much press for it: The Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival returns to the Clark County Library in Las Vegas (of course) this Saturday, Nov. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. As I have for the previous three years, I’ll be manning the Pop! Goes the Icon table in the main hall most of the day, where newcomers to the Utopian universe can pick up the trade paperback collection of the first volume at a special low price. I’ll also be bouncing around the venue doing various other things, including introducing a film and, if all goes well, playing drums with Kirby Krackle.

The event is FREE, so there’s no reason not to come out and enjoy a day of panel discussions, art workshops, creator appearances, live music, film, food, and much more. The weather should be perfect, so let’s do this!

Las Vegas Comic Expo this weekend

If you’re a fan of comics, sci-fi or gaming and live anywhere near Las Vegas, you’ll definitely want to be at the Riviera Casino & Hotel this weekend (Sept. 29-30) for the inaugural Las Vegas Comic Expo. In addition to a terrific guest line-up that includes such names as Adam Hughes, Thomas Jane, Mike Mignola, JG Jones, Len Wein, you’ll also be able to find me in the Artist Alley area of the exhibition hall. I’ll be at the Pop! Goes the Icon table, T-87, along with cartoonist F. Andrew Taylor.*

If you’ve been reading the Utopian: Foundation, but have never read the first volume of the series, you can get the Utopian trade paperback from me at a special, low price. As well, I’ll have a bunch of other comics from Pop! Goes the Icon, including anthologies that both Andy and myself have worked on. So, we’ll be signing comics, doing sketches, selling original art, etc. I hope you’ll join us.

*Note: Due to a prior obligation, I won’t be at the table from about 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday. You can still stop by to see Andy and buy books, but you won’t see my lovely face.

Bonus time for you process junkies out there: A look at how I make THE UTOPIAN: FOUNDATION. I’m a process nerd, but I hope some of you are too. Enjoy!

Script: Because I do ALL the production, start to finish, on THE UTOPIAN, there’s really no need for me to write a full script. But I do, mainly because it forced my brain to separate out the pieces of the process. But there are still usually vague notes to myself, such as the “only I’d get it” reference to the house design.

Digital pencils: Sometimes there will be a thumbnail sketch before I get to the full “pencils,” but for this strip, there wasn’t. I gather my reference materials in various layers of Photoshop (house, locker room, etc.), and “pencil” using a standard feathered brush and a color approximating non-repro blue. I’ve actually started using a light red color instead, because when I print the layouts onto art board to ink manually, it’s easier to isolate and remove the red after scanning than it is the blue.

Digital inks: I go back and forth. Lately I’ve been doing a lot more “traditional” inking (though with pens and pen-brushes, not quills and nibs), mainly because it’s faster and I can do it anywhere. This strip was done digitally, which lets me get more precise/cleaner, but sometimes it feels TOO clean. The “UNIVERSITY” letters I made by typing them with the text tool, simplifying the layer, distorting for perspective, and then deleting all but the stroke.

Flat colors: Pretty mindless – Just “filling in” the lines with basic colors. I have a palette with the main characters’ tones for skin, hair, eyes, etc., and other recurring items such as Nate’s football uniform. The other stuff I try to keep as natural as possible, unless I’m going for emotional effect.

Shading: I usually only do one or two levels of accents when coloring THE UTOPIAN, because a) it’s faster and b) I like the clean, cel-shading look. Sometimes I’ll do a layer of shade AND a layer of highlights, sometimes (as with this strip), just shading. This adds depth, shadows, shape, etc. I generally shade in black, and either reduce the layer’s opacity to 30 or 40%, or change it to “overlay,” which I did for the outdoor shading on this strip.

Odds and ends: The background in panel 2 was basically a screen capture of a Google Maps street view from a neighborhood here in Vegas, filtered with the “Cutout” effect (with alterations). The poster in the locker room is some sort of USC Trojans promotional image blurred out, and I felt like the floor needed texture, so I laid down a distorted tile pattern on an overlay layer.

Lettering: On my print comics, I letter in Illustrator, which is the industry standard. But I still enjoy doing THE UTOPIAN all in Photoshop. I guess I just got used to it and I sort-of enjoy the challenge of creating lettering and balloon effects manually. I use a lot of Blambot’s free fonts, mainly Creative Block for the dialog text, as I did with the original UTOPIAN series. A lot of others found it afterwards and use it too, but again, I like the consistency.

And there you go. Hopefully you learned something, and if you have any tips of your own to share, please do so in the comments below!

Pj Perez at MaximuM Comics

Hey! A quick update to let you know that I’ll be signing, drawing and, um, I dunno, high-fiving over at HellPop! inside the Arts Factory Las Vegas during their Free Comic Book Day celebration this Saturday, May 5 (duh) from about 5 to 10 p.m. I’ll have what few copies I have left of the Wondercon-debuted ashcan, plus other comics and stuff. If you live in the area, come down, pick up free comics, listen to loud bands, and then maybe have a drink with me afterward.

About

"The Utopian: Foundation" is a serial comic strip about young people living in a Southwestern U.S. city whose lives are all connected – and shaped – by the influence of "The Utopian," the idyllic alter-ego of James Douglas, who gave his life to help end corruption and what he perceived as "evil" at Sagebrush High School.
